Murray out, Serena and Nadal in at the US open

Andy Murray was obviously in a bad day this afternoon. He seemed to suffer from his left wrist or was it him preparing an official excuse for loosint to the giant Cilic? We’ll never know but it was clear that Murray was not at his best and looked in a very low energy mode. Cilic on the other hand

was probably playing better than ever cutting the unforced errors and serving extremely well. He will meet another giant in the next round where he will face Juan Martin Del Potro who looked extremely solid today. The battle of the 6′6′’.

Rafael Nadal lost the first set to Gael Monfils from France but became tougher and tougher as the match progressed winning his match in 4 sets. Well done Rafa. He will face Chilean Fernando Gonzales always a tough customer.

On the women’s side Serena Williams easily defeated italian player Flavia Pennetta who although improved still has ways to go before getting to someone like a healthy Serena in a grand Slam tournament. At this point I don’t see who could stop Ms Williams in this tournament. Of course the young US player Melanie Oudin is creating quite a commotion in this event but I think that her run will be over tomorrow night when she’ll face Carolina Wozniacki. The Danish tenniswoman has showned great resilience against Svetlana Kusnetsova and her defence was really impressive.

Probably that Serena will face her biggest challenge when she’ll play Kim Clijsters in the semis. The comeback lady seems to play without too much pressure as she didn’t have any great goals to meet this year. She said that she was preparing her 2010 year with a few tournament in 2009 and she didn’t expect to be in the semis at the open. Well she is and looking good. Let’s not forget that Williams leads their confrontations with a very positive 7-1 record.

One way or another there is some great tennis played at the Open this year. We’re far from the days where some people where complaining about men’s tennis saying that the rallies were too short and that the serves were too powerful. We’ve seen quite a load of amazing, long rallies where the players saved more that one winner and returned in the exchange. Just today Nadal and Monfils had at least one that lasted over a minute. Don’t try that at home, not with this pace anyway.
